Winter, the baby meerkat :)
Little bit of good news to report tonight. A few weeks ago we had a surprise meerkat pup born, had no idea the mum was even pregnant. Just 48 hours after this little one was born we found her outside the nest box, freezing cold and stiff.
We thought she was dead. But then we sort of had a green mile moment… I picked her up and cupped my hands around her, and blew warm air on her. After a few minutes of nothing, she sprung to life in my hands and started wriggling. The mum was so excited to hear her squeaks, she took her back and started feeding her straight away. She’s not out of the woods yet.. but three weeks later and she is still here, her eyes are just starting to open.
We have named her Winter :)

i miss tumbling… i may return? been a crazy few months… lots of stories, pictures, animals, good times, hard times, changes… i think i will come back here…. who is this btw?
Been thinking of this for a while now and wondering if any of you lovely tumblr people might be interested in something like this… many of us are bored over the summer months and looking for some sort of affordable yet once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience…
How would you like to spend one or two weeks camping in a small forest in the middle of the Irish countryside? For a few hours during the day you would help out with our animals at the sanctuary… working with the raccoons, coatimundis, kinkajous, ringtail lemurs, skunks, possums, meerkats, reptiles and every other exotic animal here - the work would involve feeding, cleaning out, building/maintenance of the enclosures and helping us come up with new enrichment ideas and putting them into practice. Then you would have the rest of the day off to enjoy camp fires, BBQs, walks in the countryside etc… plus a couple of days off every week to visit places like the Giant’s Causeway or go shopping in Belfast.
We would pick you up from the airport, bring you here, give you all a tent each, give you three meals a day and I’d say we’d all have a pretty good time. All you’d have to bring is clothes, a sleeping bag and spending money. We’re thinking a two week trip would cost around £350, but the price could change. And a one week stay would be around £250. Thats around half the price of staying in a hotel or anything over here, and remember that’s including three basic meals a day plus being taken to all the touristy places over here, PLUS working with animals :). Also the price will be less if you bring a friend or a partner.
So… if you, or a friend, can’t think of what to do with your time this summer… if you like animals and want to help look after them… if you like nature… if you like good fun with good people… if you like the idea of spending a fortnight in the Irish countryside… send me a message :). I am just gauging interest right now, but I will put together an itinerary and work out exact prices and a better description of what would be going on here and if you’re interested I can send you the info asap. Please share this with any animal/nature/travel loving friends too.
If you’re sharing this with someone who doesn’t have tumblr, please get them to either add me on facebook or email me.
